Is it Safe to Fire .300 Whisper in a .300 AAC Blackout Firearm?

December 8, 2011

There is an outstanding article about the .300 Whisper and .300 AAC Blackout on The Truth About Guns blog. It’s worth a look if you’re intersested in either one of these cartridges. The .300 Blackout  IS the next big thing in the AR market and I predict that it will be the hot item at this years SHOT Show. I’ll be in the market for one.

The 300 Whisper and 300 Blackout have small differences in their brass dimensions: Blackout 0.004 larger in the neck, 0.018 longer case length and 0.16 longer OAL. Also the Whisper is a wildcat while the Blackout is SAAMI standardized. Apparently those differences make the Blackout the more attractive of the two.

Would a Blackout chamber accept a Whisper round? How dangerous might that be?

I would also go with the Blackout. I feel like it’s a better choice for a lot of reasons, many of which are outlined in the article you reference. As to whether the ammunition of the whisper would work in the Blackout, my opinion is that it is better to be safe than sorry. I would just use the ammunition that’s recommended.
